Cheshire East to deliver extension to Flag Lane Link project

Works are about to start on a section of Delamere Street in Crewe, to improve access to the town centre and encourage more people to get out on their bike.

The project will start on Monday and take three weeks to complete. Once finished, it will extend the successful Flag Lane Link scheme completed last year, which was funded through the government’s Future High Streets Fund.

The works starting on Monday are also receiving funding through the Future High Streets Fund but are mainly funded through the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

A key benefit of the scheme is to improve the flow of traffic at this busy junction for all road users but especially cyclists. This is being achieved by adding a segregated contraflow cycle lane for cyclists, delivering the safest possible route into the town centre.

Councillor Craig Browne, chair of Cheshire East Council’s highways and transport committee, said:

“This is excellent news for all road users, residents and especially cyclists. We’ll also be completing road resurfacing at the junction of Flag Lane to Gatefield Street and St Mary’s Street as part of the improvements being made, to ensure that residents get the best value for money out of the time we’re working there.”

Councillor Chris Hilliard, Cheshire East Council’s walking and cycling member champion, said:

“This junction is a busy spot and so I’m delighted that the needs of cyclists have been fully taken into account with this excellent new project.

“The Flag Lane Link significantly improved access to the town centre, by reducing congestion and journey times in and out of Crewe by linking Dunwoody Way to Delamere Street via Flag Lane last year. This work has already benefited cyclists significantly, but this next phase of work will now hopefully encourage even more people to get out on their bikes and trikes.”

For the duration of the works, there will be a road closure in place on Delamere Street from the junction of Flag Lane to Gatefield Street and St Mary’s Street, which is where the cyclists’ contraflow will be installed. Appropriate signage will be in place at all times.
