Cheshire Police Federation Chair comments on new lockdown restrictions across England

As England enters a second lockdown, the Chairman of Cheshire Police Federation has said he’s extremely proud of the way his colleagues have conducted themselves over the past eight months.

From Thursday 5 November, non-essential shops and services will close and people will be asked to stay at home unless for specific purposes.

This poses more challenges for the way that the police deal with those who break the rules. But Cheshire Police Federation Chairman Jamie Thompson said that his colleagues would continue to adapt.

He said: “I am extremely proud of the efforts of my colleagues over the past eight months, in the way they have dealt with the ever-changing landscape of COVID.

“There seems there isn’t a week that goes by when we don’t have to change the way we work, learn new legislation or have alterations to our own working environment. Officers have got on with the job in hand, despite the risk of catching COVID hanging over them all the time.”

An extra challenge could be the public tiring of restrictions after eight months of COVID rules, but Jamie encouraged people to do what’s right.

He said: “I appreciate that the public are weary with restrictions on their movements, and as we enter the second national lockdown I urge them to do the right thing.

“The vast majority of the public are doing their bit to slow down this virus and protect themselves and others. Sadly there are a minority who feel that the rules don’t apply to them. They will be dealt with robustly and they shouldn’t be surprised when they are issued with a fine or are required to appear before a court to explain their actions.”
