Colleges Week Comes To Macclesfield

As part of Macclesfield College’s celebrations, local MP, David Rutley, met with Rachel Kay, Principal, for an update on steps the college has been taking to develop and grow their curriculum.

David was pleased to hear that there continues to be an increase in demand of students wanting to study at Macclesfield College, with applications pacing 20% ahead of this time last year.

Ms Kay explained to David that 1 in 4 apprentices are enrolled on the Plumber and Domestic Heating course. To ensure the College can offer a comprehensive programme that provides the best education for their students, they will be introducing Plumbing from September. David was also impressed to hear about the steps the Automotive department has been taking, through funding from the Local Skills Improvement Fund. The College will be one of only five colleges in the country that will benefit from having a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle.

Macclesfield College aims to provide students with a wrap-around package of education and wider experiences. Students from the Art and Creative Media course have recently had the opportunity to take part in the Turin project, which has seen them spend four weeks in Italy and Belgium completing work experience and gaining invaluable skills.

The Association of Colleges, which represents more than 90% of England’s colleges, launched Colleges Week in 2018 and this year marks its 7th anniversary. The week aims to celebrate the contribution that colleges make to their students, wider communities and to raise awareness of any challenges they may face.

Ms Kay also informed David, that on 7th March the College will be hosting its Apprenticeship Open Day. From 4:30pm till 7pm, aspiring apprentices will have the opportunity to meet with a range of employers from various sectors. The event will also provide information on the various options available, from Entry Level to advanced University Level apprenticeships.

More information on the event and how to book, can be found using the following link:

Speaking after the visit, David said:

“It’s good to see how Macclesfield College continues to expand the courses it has to offer and that they are leading the way in areas such as their Automotive department. Once again, Colleges Week has provided another opportunity to celebrate the hard work of students and all the staff at Macclesfield College.”
