Commissioner commends road safety heroes

This week, 15th -21st November 2021, is Road Safety Week and Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, John Dwyer, is reminding everyone of the importance of road safety.

This year, the focus of Road Safety Week is to celebrate road safety heroes: The people and organisations who work to ensure that our roads remain safe for all road users.

John Dwyer, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, said: “One death on our roads is one too many. I know there is always more we can do to reduce harm and promote safer road use.

“The Roads and Crime Unit at Cheshire Constabulary do fantastic work, which was recently showcased on the TV show Motorway Cops. I know many other officers, staff and volunteers who all work hard to make our roads safer, and for that I thank them all.”

Making the county’s roads safer is a key priority for the Commissioner, and he outlined how he was going to achieve this in his Police and Crime Plan. Specifically, the Commissioner wants to focus on the need to educate those who use the roads around the ‘Fatal 5’, which are the main contributory factors for road traffic collisions.

The Fatal 5 are:

  • Careless driving
  • Drink/drug driving
  • Not wearing a seatbelt
  • Distracted. For example, using a mobile phone
  • Speeding

John Dwyer said: “The education of road users isn’t just the sole responsibility of the police. I will continue to play an active role in, and support the Cheshire Road Safety Group to ensure all the road safety awareness activity delivered across Cheshire is coordinated and delivers the same objectives.

“I am committed to developing relationships with national organisations such as the Institute of Advanced Motorists and Road Peace to understand best practice and new techniques in road safety.

Road safety is an important issue that residents across the county regularly raise with the Commissioner. In his Autumn Survey, the Commissioner would like to hear about communities’ road safety concerns.
