Congleton comes together to remember those who served and sacrificed everything

Congleton fell silent at 11am on Sunday after crowds turned out to watch the town’s annual Remembrance Parade.

Thousands of residents, including veterans, cadets and community groups supported Remembrance Sunday at Congleton’s new Cenotaph.

The parade, led by Gary Dolman from the Royal British Legion marched from West Street car park at 10.30am making its way to the Lawton Street Cenotaph. The outdoor service was conducted by Rev. Ian Enticott and Gary Dolman. After the two minutes silence, representatives of the armed forces, veterans, emergency services and town organisations were called up to the Cenotaph to lay a series of wreaths.

There was barely a space to spare with over 30 wreaths presented. Laying the first wreath was Dennis Dunn, MBE JP Deputy Lieutenant. Other dignities included Fiona Bruce MP for Congleton and Town Mayor, Cllr Denis Murphy and his Cadet, Tom Gilman. Cllr Murphy said: “It was a moment for townsfolk to unite to remember those past and present who sacrificed everything in service of our country. We will remember them.”

Veterans Russ Mien and Don Rogers both paid tribute. The poignant words of the Kohima Epitaph were spoken: When you go home, tell them of us and say “for your tomorrow we gave our today.” The Last Post was played by Michael Whitehurst.

After the ceremony, the parade marched to St Peter’s Church for a service. Followed by refreshments at the Town Hall for invited dignitaries.
