Flood warning remains in place in Northwich

Emergency services and partner agencies are continuing to work hard to minimise disruption in Northwich following the heavy rain brought by Storm Henk.

The flood warnings remain in place Northwich town centre and Acton Bridge, although at this time no properties have been affected by the flooding.

The water level in Northwich town centre has started to fall, although the river Weaver is taking longer to recede than initially thought, meaning that the flood warnings will remain in place overnight.

As a result, residents who have been evacuated from their boats are not expected to be able to return and will instead be offered accommodation at a local hotel.

The flood defences will also remain in place overnight and London Road, between Chesterway and The Bull Ring, is not expected to reopen until tomorrow morning (Thursday 4 January).

Diversions are in place, but motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible. Local businesses, including Waitrose, remain open at this time, although the car parks are closed.

Superintendent Paul Hughes from Cheshire Constabulary said:

“So far, we have been able to keep the disruption in Northwich to a minimum and thankfully no properties have been flooded.

“However, we are continuing to monitor the situation and work closely with our partners in the community to ensure that residents can carry on their daily business safely.

“I would encourage residents in the affected areas to monitor the alerts from the Environment Agency and take action if flooding has been forecast in your area.”

Residents are reminded not to walk or drive through any flood water – this is often deeper than it looks, it may be moving fast and there could be hidden hazards underneath such as raised manhole covers, which can pose a danger.
