Local MP visits Sutton St James Pre-School and Hollinhey Primary School

Local MP, David Rutley, recently visited St James Pre-School and Hollinhey Primary School and met with both Ms Mili Bhatia, Chair of the Pre-School, and Headteacher, Mrs Sarah Clough, to discuss future plans, meet with pupils and take questions from them about his work as a Member of Parliament.

During the visit, David joined the pupils and the impressive team of staff in the pre-school during their engaging and fun morning routine. David also had the opportunity to discuss with Ms Bhatia the pre-school’s future plans to build an innovative new facility on the current site. The plans will create a building that will act as a community asset and have a dedicated SEN area.

David also met with each of the classes within the primary school, ranging from Reception to Year 6 and answered a variety of well prepared and interesting questions from each year group. The questions ranged from how to become a Member of Parliament, how MP’s vote to what the House of Commons is like as a place to work in. David was impressed by the pupils’ active interest in how Westminster works and the country’s democratic processes.

Due to the interest the students showed in Parliament during their questions, David suggested that the Hollinhey pupils might be interested in visiting the House of Commons to experience a day of activities learning more about how Parliament works. This programme is open to all schools and David would be happy to support and facilitate any schools in the Macclesfield constituency wishing to visit.

Speaking after the visit, David said, “I am grateful to Mrs Clough, Ms Bhatia and to the wider teaching team for the important work they do. The questions asked during my visit showed a keen interest from the pupils in the way Parliament works and I am pleased the school will be looking into coming to the House of Commons in the future. I hope to be able to welcome them and other local schools to Parliament over the months ahead.”
