Officers launch summer initiative to tackle burglary offences

Officers from Macclesfield Local Policing Unit have launched a summer initiative in response to burglary offences in eastern Cheshire.

Operation Intervene is Cheshire Police’s response to burglaries within Macclesfield Local Policing Unit on the border with Greater Manchester, including Wilmslow, Knutsford and Alderley Edge.

The initiative is designed to crack down on high value burglaries by targeting cross-border offenders who come to Cheshire to burgle homes in affluent areas.

It also aims to offer public reassurance and crime prevention advice to residents during the summer holidays.

As part of the operation local officers will be deployed to burglary hotspots and plain clothed officers will also be patrolling these areas.

Officers will also be working with the Roads and Crime Unit for their assistance in known trigger locations.

Detective Sergeant Angela Coppock said:

“Burglaries are an upsetting crime to deal with because everyone deserves the right to feel safe in their own home.

“There is often an increase in burglaries during the summer holidays and Operation Intervene aims to clamp down further on those committing crime in this area of Cheshire.

“You can help us by reporting suspicious behaviour in your area, as well as staying vigilant and using our advice and guidance to help prevent burglary in your neighbourhood.

“Remember to ensure you lock and secure your premises before leaving your property, especially if you will be gone for a long period of time, such as when you go on holiday.

“Together, we can make Cheshire a hostile environment for criminals seeking to commit crime.”

Here are some burglary prevention tips:

  • Make sure that all windows are closed and locked, even when you are at home or in the garden.
  • Use the security measures on modern windows, which allow them to let some air in but still be locked.
  • All external doors should always be secured, even when you are at home.
  • Keep all valuables out of sight and ensure that large amounts of cash are never kept in the home.
  • Always use a chain if you are unsure of the identity of visitors to your home when answering the door – or similar.
  • Fit CCTV cameras or video doorbells to help deter offenders.
  • It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on your neighbourhood and report any suspicious activity to police.
