Residents urged to follow burglary prevention advice

Officers from Macclesfield Local Policing Unit are continuing to urge residents to follow burglary prevention advice amid a recent rise in vehicle thefts in eastern Cheshire.

Officers patrolling hotspot areas in Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, and Knutsford, have noticed an increase in burglaries in which cars have been stolen. They are now urging residents to always secure their vehicles, store car keys in a safe place, and keep them out of sight.

Detective Sergeant Angela Coppock said:

“We have noticed an increase in car thefts where the suspects have stolen car keys after gaining access to properties.

“There is often a rise in burglaries during the summer holidays, so we would urge residents to do all they can to make it harder for offenders.

“Keep your vehicles secure and don’t leave the keys visible in your property near windows and doors, where they can easily be stolen.

“As we enter August and many people are due to go on holiday, please remember to also ensure you lock and secure your premises before leaving your property.

“The same goes for if we see the return of hot weather this summer – always secure your home and don’t leave windows and doors open.

“You can help us by reporting suspicious behaviour in your area, as well as staying vigilant and using our advice and guidance to help prevent burglary in your neighbourhood.”

Here are some burglary prevention tips:

  • Make sure that all windows are closed and locked, even when you are at home or in the garden.
  • Use the security measures on modern windows, which allow them to let some air in but still be locked.
  • All external doors should always be secured, even when you are at home.
  • Keep all valuables out of sight and ensure that large amounts of cash are never kept in the home.
  • Always use a chain if you are unsure of the identity of visitors to your home when answering the door – or similar.
  • Fit CCTV cameras or video doorbells to help deter offenders.
  • It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on your neighbourhood and report any suspicious activity to police.
