Wilmslow Home Care Team praised during Westminster debate about dementia

Carefound Home Care of Wilmslow has been used as an example in Westminster by Esther McVey MP in relation to supporting people living with dementia during coronavirus.

People affected by dementia have been hit hardest by covid-19 and a disproportionate share (27.5%) of the people who have died with the disease from March to June had dementia. Furthermore, there were over 5,000 excess non-covid-19 deaths amongst people with dementia from January to July.

In Tatton in Cheshire, there are currently more than 812 people over 65 with a registered dementia diagnosis from their GP. Member of Parliament for Tatton, Esther McVey, spoke about the experiences of some of her constituents at Westminster Hall on 12th November 2020 during a speech about the effect of the covid-19 outbreak on people affected by dementia.

The Wilmslow team of local dementia care provider, Carefound Home Care, were delighted to be praised for their efforts in supporting elderly people to live safely in their own homes during the pandemic.

Esther McVey, Member of Parliament for Tatton, said:

“I know that in Tatton and across the country care workers, family members and helpers have worked tirelessly, and I put on record my thanks and appreciation to all those people. Oliver Stirk, director of Carefound Home Care in Wilmslow, told me that their carers have adapted to the situation. Their patients are no longer now allowed to go to the pub to have a Sunday lunch, so his carers are cooking for them at home, so they can have some kind of enjoyment. They have also done much to support the families to get online.”

Oliver Stirk, Managing Director of Carefound Home Care, said:

“We’re very proud of the care and support our home care team provide in Tatton and it’s great to see their efforts referenced in Westminster. The covid-19 pandemic has presented enormous challenges for families affected by dementia and we have seen some amazing examples of our carers going above and beyond and putting the specialist approach to dementia care we use into practice - the SPECAL method.”
