An overture from an opera with monsters, magic and wizards is as over-the-top as that implies and opens tonight's concert before we turn to Rachmaninov’s second piano concerto; is this the only music ever dedicated to a composer’s hypnotist?! Either way, the concerto has from the outset been at the very top of everyone’s favourite pieces. It has been a regular No.1 in Classic FM’s annual charts and is the overall No.1 in the aggregated chart. Giulia Contaldo became a smash hit when she stepped into a BBC Phil concert on two days' notice in 2022. We think you are going to love her.

And since its premiere in 1902, Sibelius' Second Symphony has probably been his most popular work too. From the three note opening motif which forms its core to to the triumphant finale with its soaring, heroic music, Sibelius 2 provides a fitting end to our 2022/23 season.
