Since 1979, as Punk became New Wave, The Pretenders, fronted by Chrissie Hynde, took the charts by storm, clocking up hit singles including 'Stop Your Sobbing', 'Brass In Pocket, 'Back On The Chain Gang', the annual Christmas anthem '2000 Miles' and the power ballad 'I'll Stand By You', years later covered as a charity single by Girls Aloud.
