ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE!

A Sandbach-based TV and theatre director creates a ‘virtual academy’, accessible to all during lock down.

As coronavirus measures temporarily close the doors on acting, dancing and singing school Carney Academy, principal Ruth Carney – a director, working across Casualty, Holby City and Emmerdale – has launched a free ‘virtual academy’ for everyone aged four to adult.

The teachers who usually lead classes every Saturday morning at Sandbach Town Hall are currently helping the Academy’s YouTube, Instagram and Facebook followers improve their vocals, dance technique and acting skills. All followers have the opportunity to film their efforts and submit for the feedback of leading industry professionals.

David Gregan-Jones oversees acting classes at Carney Academy Cheshire and has just finished filming for Russell T Davies’ new series Boys, due to air later this year. He is part of the panel that reviews videos and offers personal advice to trainee actors.

On the initiative, he said: “We were all going a little stir crazy in light of government guidelines on social distancing.

“Initially, we just wanted to be connected to our students, to check they were ok. We soon all realised that we needed to do something more, so we started posting challenges to our social channels.

“The uptake has been fantastic and it’s great to see so many new faces get involved. There’s a real sense of community here.”

Carney Academy has been established for ten years and prides itself on developing performance art skills in its students that build confidence; social and vocal skills, as well as developing performance and professional theatre skills. The Academy’s re-opening date is yet to be confirmed.

Principal Ruth Carney said: “If ever there was a time to try something new and even entertain others, it’s now.

“I’m so proud of my team for working with me to keep people engaged in the arts and maintain our spirits.

“Everyone in the performing arts industry is being brave and facing into the future, although none of us are sure when filming will re-start or when performance venues will welcome audiences again.”
