Jodrell Bank Centre for Engagement will be hosting European Space Agency (ESA) Astronaut, John McFall, for a special Lovell Lecture in conversation with the Centre’s Director, Teresa Anderson.
On Tuesday July 15th, 2025, astronaut John McFall will be visiting Jodrell Bank for a day of inspiring workshops and talks with local schools, followed by a public, evening Lovell Lecture in conversation with the Centre for Engagement’s Director, Professor Teresa Anderson.
John’s story – from life-changing injury to becoming ESA’s first para-astronaut – is one of determination, ambition, and a bold reimagining of what’s possible. After losing his right leg in a motorcycle accident at the age of 19, John went on to become a Paralympic medallist and qualified doctor, combining elite sport with a passion for medicine and innovation. In 2022, he was selected by ESA to join the astronaut cohort as part of a groundbreaking feasibility study examining how astronauts with physical disabilities can contribute to long-duration space missions. Now medically cleared for potential missions to the International Space Station, John is at the forefront of shaping a more inclusive future for space exploration.
As well as offering a rare glimpse into his unique personal and professional journey, his lecture will explore what’s in store for the future of human spaceflight, how ESA missions are advancing our understanding of the universe, and what it means to push the boundaries of space exploration.
Prior to his evening lecture, there will be a short media opportunity to meet with John against the backdrop of the historic, Grade I listed Lovell Telescope (6.15 - 7.00pm).
