A lot of rural properties use their own oil to heat their house and there can be an increase in the theft of heating and diesel oil whenever the price of oil rises.
| This makes oil more attractive for thieves and they can actively target fuel tanks at farms & domestic properties. These tanks can contain thousands of pounds worth of oil and is therefore essential to take a few precautions to protect them. Below are some things you can do to protect your own Diesel and heating oil: If possible, locate the tank out of sight of the main road and in view of the house. Securing your oil tank with a wooden or metal fence can give significant protection to the tank. A metal grill or cage with a lockable access point across the top of this wall or fence can further improve security. Control switches that control the flow of oil should be turned off and the electricity supply isolated when the tank is not in use. Invest in a good quality lock, close shackle padlocks are the best as they offer most resistance to thieves. Remote electronic oil level gauges are now available which will set off an alarm if the oil level suddenly drops or falls below a quarter full. These gauges can be located in the house to warn of any potential problem. Consider installing security lights. CCTV is helpful if a crime has been committed and it comes to reporting it. Another great alternative are the wildlife camera traps. These are relativity cheap and effective. I hope you found that useful and if you'd like to discuss more please don't hesitate to get in touch with your Rural Crime Team. |
