Poynton Golden Memories Celebrate Jubilee

Poynton Golden Memories recently held a Platinum Jubilee celebration and local MP, David Rutley, was invited along to join in with the 1952 themed activities.

From singing the National Anthem to eating an old-fashioned ration book style lunch, the day was full of fun, whilst recognising the historic occasion of Her Majesty the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

The Platinum Jubilee Celebration Party was held at the Poynton Civic Centre, and it was a chance for Poynton Golden Memories members and volunteers to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Accession to the British Throne. In honour of Her Majesty, lunch was made up of coronation chicken sandwiches and corn beef, reminiscent of World War II, followed by dancing to songs from the time. The group also had the opportunity to dress up in 1952 themed attire or patriotic, Union Jack print accessories.

Poynton Golden Memories’ activities takes place on a fortnightly basis, Wednesday, 11am-3pm, at the Poynton Civic Centre. The group operates on a “drop-in” basis and the only criteria to participating is that a person living with Dementia / Alzheimer’s must be accompanied by their spouse, a relative or a Carer. The aim of the get-togethers is to lighten everyone’s spirits and support members with laughter, enjoyment, information and most importantly, friendship.

In addition, outings are organised which help Members to socialise and create new friendships. Since January 2017, the group has had meals at Brookside Garden Centre, organised trips on the Mary Sunley Canal Boat, organised Christmas and Birthday parties, coach trips to Trentham Gardens and Llandudno, and taken a coach party to see the Christmas Pantomime at The Plaza in Stockport.

The group was set up by Judy Hatton, Gerald Scriven and Edith Clark in 2017 (all three being 24/7 carers for their spouses) and has grown over the past five and a half years positively helping many living with Dementia/Alzheimer’s, with over 80 people attending the Jubilee party.  In 2019, Judy, Gerald and Edith were presented with Civic Pride Award Certificates, in recognition of their sustained and significant contribution to the community of Poynton.  More information on the group and their contact details, can be found on their website:

Speaking after the party, David said “Thank you to Poynton Golden Memories for inviting me to their Jubilee Celebration, it was a patriotic and fun day to celebrate Her Majesty. The work of this group is truly inspiring and makes a difference to the lives of those living with dementia/Alzheimer’s and also their families. I would urge anyone who needs assistance or would like to volunteer to contact the Poynton Golden Memories team - they will receive a very warm welcome.”
