Second doses give you “stronger and longer” protection against Covid-19 and variants

Senior clinicians in Cheshire and Merseyside and across the North West are urging everyone eligible in the area to come forward for their second dose of Covid vaccine to ensure their protection against Covid-19 is stronger and longer.

Second doses of AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna vaccines all offer the best protection against the virus and work against variants, including the Delta variant, that has been spreading across the North West in the last month.
Cheshire and Merseyside are now accelerating access to second dose appointments and so far over 1.25 million second doses have been given in the area.

Dr Richard Preece, Clinical Lead for the COVID-19 Mass Vaccination Programme at NHS England and NHS Improvement North West said: “Getting your second dose of the Covid vaccine, no matter what type, is key as it offers enduring and stronger protection, and increased protection against variants such as Delta.

“For those having their second dose, it’s important to note that symptoms after vaccination as your immune system is activated are usually milder and it really does ensure you are as protected as possible.”

Robin Wiggs, Co-lead of the Vaccination Service for Cheshire and Merseyside added: “Side effects from the Covid-19 vaccines are a sign of your body building a strong defence against the virus. If you had side effects from your first dose or not, this is a sign of your immune system doing its job and preparing your body to protect you against Covid-19 and this is completely normal behaviour from any vaccine.”

Stephen Roche, 52, who has received his second dose said: “I was pleased to have both my Covid-19 vaccinations as it is the best protection against the disease. I have elderly parents and young children, so I did not hesitate booking my vaccines when I was invited, for me it was as much about protecting my family as it was about protecting myself. Now that I am fully vaccinated, I must admit I feel more confident going out and about. Obviously I am still sticking to the guidelines, but having had both vaccines is so important. I would encourage everyone who is eligible for the vaccine to go ahead, for yourself, your friends and family and the community.”
