SUMMER HOLIDAY FUN FOR CHILDREN AT CHESHIRE’S AWARD-WINNING LION SALT WORKS MUSEUM

The multi-award-winning Lion Salt Works Museum, based near Northwich, will be hosting action-packed fun for children this Summer. Each week will feature a different theme for two-days of creative ‘drop in’ workshops, taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

For instance, during Olympic Week, children can make their own gold medal for the Olympic podium; while Football Week gives children the opportunity to design a club badge and football strip for the fictional Lion Salt Works Football Club. ‘Design Your Own Outfit’ Week will give children the chance to design their perfect outfit as part of celebrating the museum’s stunning ‘Created Closet’ historic fashion exhibition. The Summer will end with the chance to make enchanting ‘Under the Sea’ mobiles. For more information go to westcheshiremuseums.co.uk or call the Museum on 01606 275040.

During each week of the Summer, the Museum’s Tuesday and Wednesday activities take place between 10.30am – 12.30pm and 2pm - 4.30pm. Drop-in activities are suitable for young visitors aged up to 11. All the activities are free but there is a suggested donation of £3.00. Visitors do not have to pay to go into the Museum to take part in these events. The site has an imaginatively-themed play area; free butterfly garden and free parking. Everyone can visit the onsite café and shop.

To ensure visitors feel safe when attending the advice is to:

  • Carry out and have a negative Lateral Flow Test 24h prior to attending the event
  • That people should do a symptoms check prior to leaving home.
  • That people consider their own measures prior to attending which could include face masks inside and some social distancing in busy areas.
  • Visitors are also encouraged to download and log their Covid status on the NHS app

Week 1   Olympic Week - Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 August.

Children can exercise their imaginations by creating their own personalised Olympic medal out of clay, proudly wearing it all summer long.

Week 2   Football Week  – Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 August

The world of football will be brought to life in a series of fun activities such as making an exciting ‘blow football’ game and designing a badge and strip for the Lion Salt Works Museum’s fictional football team. Children can enter their badge and strip designs into a competition with the winning design being turned into a real t-shirt.

Week 3   Design Your Own Outfit   - Tuesday 17 August – Wednesday 18 August

Drawing Your Perfect Outfit – a lovely creative activity for children whether their favourite outfit is sports gear or vintage fashion.  This activity celebrates the beautiful photos of vintage wedding dresses currently on display in the museum’s ‘Curated Closet’ exhibition – an exploration of 20th dresses from Chester Grosvenor Museum’s Historic Costume Collection.

Week 4  ‘Under the Sea’  mobiles– Tuesday 24 August - Wednesday 25 August

Jellyfish, star fish and rainbow-coloured fish will float magnificently on tranquil ‘Under the Sea’ mobiles created by children during this colourful craft activity week. The mobiles will be a lovely thing to enjoy for the rest of the summer.

Councillor Louise Gittins, Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council said: “Parents looking for fun, action-packed and educational activities over the long Summer holiday need look no further than the list of varied and creative activities at the Lion Salt Works. Located next to the beautiful Northwich woodlands and right next to the tranquil Trent & Mersey Canal with is colourful narrowboats, the Museum is the perfect location to come for the day with friends and family.”

The multi award-winning Lion Salt Works features not only fun and interactive displays about the story of salt and its impact on the landscape, people and industries of Cheshire but also a spectacular ‘sound and light show’, ‘subsiding house’ and an automaton, which is always a firm favourite with children.
