Thousands celebrate Platinum Jubilee at Congleton’s Picnic in the Park

Thousands flocked to Congleton Park, coming together to eat, drink and enjoy each other's company as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The free event organised by Congleton Town Council and Friends of Congleton Park attracted an enormous crowd, the largest seen for years.

Revellers rocked up early to set up their spots for an afternoon of music and games. Tables and picnic rugs were filled with food and drink fit for a Queen. Congleton Town Mayor, Cllr Margaret Gartside and Congleton Town Crier Cllr Paul Duffy officially opened the event followed by live band the Encores playing toe tapping tunes from the 50s and 60s. There were sets from local talent Aimee Jackson and the Can’t Sing Choir. Audley Brass Band delivered the grand finale playing rousing pomp and pageantry tunes.

Cllr Margaret Gartside said: “It was a pleasure to see such a good-natured, relaxed crowd enjoying the sun and engaging in the community spirit that Congleton is renowned for. Seeing the young and old come together to experience the occasion really does make me proud to be Mayor of Congleton. After two years of Covid fears, we really wanted to do something special for the town, organising the picnic in the park was the perfect opportunity. On behalf of the town council, I would like to thank everyone involved who worked tirelessly to make the event happen either behind the scenes or those that gave up their time on the day. We have fantastic team of volunteers whose support we really do appreciate. Thank to the Cheshire Community Foundation for their financial contribution towards the event and local companies Siemens and Beresfords who kindly offered their car parks.”

Other attractions enjoyed on the day included a fabulous Punch and Judy show by Elizabeth’s Group, the RSPCA Macclesfield dog show, a chance to join in games with the Harriers and the Rugby club, crafts, face painting, stalls and much more. Plus, food and drink from local companies.

Stuart Bridge a guest at the event said: “I would like to pass on my family's thanks to everyone involved in the event. A fantastic memorable occasion for all those in attendance. I am sure in 70 years time there will be adults who will be able to remember such a great event. The success of which was down to all the organisers, stall holders and volunteers. As soon as we entered the park the atmosphere was bouncing, my grandsons had a fantastic time. There were so many great attractions for the family but the piece de resistance was the Audley Brass Band.”

Party goer, Pauline Turner said: “I went down to the park with a picnic and thoroughly enjoyed it all. The organisers should be congratulated, it was such a lovely atmosphere, people were chilled and appreciating what was on offer. The bands were great and so was the dog show and it was all done with such good taste.”

The next big event to be hosted by the Town Council is Medieval Festival Day in the park on Saturday 13 August. The council is looking to add to its team of volunteers. If are able to offer some time on the day or in advance, please contact:
