TownSq Crewe officially opens, marking major milestone in town centre regeneration

A major new chapter in Crewe’s regeneration journey was celebrated with the official opening of TownSq Crewe, a modern, flexible workspace set to support local businesses, entrepreneurs and the wider community.

The opening event, attended by partners, stakeholders and local businesses, was led by the Cheshire East Mayor, Cllr Judy Snowball (Labour) who described the development as, “a significant milestone in the continuing regeneration of Crewe and a strong symbol of our shared ambition for its future.”

TownSq Crewe is located in the heart of Crewe’s town centre, at the town’s refurbished Municipal Building on Heath Street, the site of former council offices. The 20,000 sq ft space has been designed to be more than just a workspace. The development provides high-quality offices, coworking areas and meeting spaces, alongside opportunities for collaboration, networking and business growth.

Speaking at the event, the Mayor highlighted the wider importance of the project:

“Places like this play a vital role in the life of a town. They are more than just physical spaces; they are places where people can come together, where businesses can grow, and where new ideas can take shape.”

The opening reflects Crewe’s ongoing transformation and its ability to evolve in response to modern economic challenges. As the town centre adapts to changing patterns of work and retail, TownSq Crewe offers a forward-looking solution aimed at creating a vibrant and relevant destination.

The Mayor said:

“Town Square Crewe represents a direct response to that challenge,” the Mayor said. “It reflects a clear vision: to create a high-quality, flexible space that supports enterprise, encourages investment, and provides new opportunities for local people.”

The project has been delivered through strong partnership working, supported by funding from the Future High Streets Fund and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, demonstrating national confidence in Crewe’s future.

The building has been transformed into a modern, adaptable hub designed to meet the needs of today’s businesses while remaining flexible for the future. The Mayor emphasised that such developments are key to increasing footfall in the town centre and supporting local economic growth.

The Mayor added:

“Developments like this help drive footfall, support local businesses, and give people more reasons to visit, whether to work, shop, socialise or simply spend time here.”

The operation of the space will be led by Town Square Spaces Ltd, whose experience will help create a vibrant and active business community within the building.

TownSq Crewe forms part of the town’s wider £100 million regeneration programme, which includes recent and upcoming projects such as the Lifestyle Centre, the Market Hall, the University Technical College, the Dome Youth Zone and the Cheshire Archive.

Together, these developments reflect a shared ambition to transform Crewe into a thriving, forward-looking town, with the long-term vision of becoming one of Europe’s best small cities by 2050.

Closing the ceremony, the Mayor said:

“The final word should go to the businesses and organisations that will be based here; your ambition and commitment will truly bring this space to life.”

TownSq Crewe is now open and ready to welcome businesses, entrepreneurs and the community.
