Work started on Winsford town centre regeneration

Work has started on Cheshire West and Chester Council’s ambitious regeneration of Winsford town centre.

The Council-led redevelopment scheme involves the demolition of some existing buildings and the construction of new and improved spaces for B&M and Costa Coffee, along with a new 168-space car park alongside improvement to walking, cycling access and dedicated cycle storage.

New open public spaces are being created for exciting pop-ups, events and visiting attractions, with more green space in the town centre than ever before, creating a relaxing and pleasant environment to enjoy. There is also a continued commitment to the town’s cultural programme, building on the success of Winsford Creates and Cine-window. Proposals are also being developed for a vibrant community hub, which incorporates toilets for public use and adds to the existing town centre provision.

Kier construction workers are erecting hoardings and beginning work on the project. Construction is due to be complete by the end of 2024.

The public is being advised that there may be disruption to pedestrian access and routes around the town centre while work is taking place. Signage is being installed to advise of alternative routes.

The Dene Drive car park in the middle of the site will be closed from 22 May 2023. Residents are advised to please consider taking the bus, walk, cycle, or use one of the many alternative car parks around the town centre while work is going on.

Town centre businesses have been contacted directly and the Council is working with them to provide an interim parking solution for staff whilst construction takes place.

All businesses in the town centre, along with Winsford Library and Vale House Resource Centre, remain open as usual for people to visit.

Cllr Nathan Pardoe, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation, said:

“I’m delighted that work has started on the Council’s exciting plans for the regeneration of Winsford town centre. The project is vital to delivering on the aspirations of the people of Winsford and will help to drive the local economy in the town centre.

“Opportunities for new and existing businesses, and fantastic green open spaces for events or just enjoying a coffee, will make the town a great place to visit for local people. It’ll become a destination for families and will offer more than retail.

“As with any town centre construction project, there will be changes for visitors and businesses. The Dene Drive car park will have to be closed while work takes place and there may be some changes to walking routes around the town, but I appreciate residents being patient while the work takes place to provide a bright and exciting future for Winsford.”

Whilst acknowledging that the works will create some inconvenience, the Council will provide regular updates regarding progress for the duration of the works so that people are aware of what is happening at the various stages of the project.
