Commissioner praises Constabulary on domestic abuse operation success

Sixty people were arrested over a 72-hour period from 23-25 November during Operation Guardians, which saw Cheshire Constabulary clamp down on domestic abuse perpetrators.

The operation aimed to target people suspected of committing domestic abuse and get victims and their families the support they need.

John Dwyer, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, said: “The action taken by the Constabulary demonstrates the hard stance taken here in Cheshire when it comes to tackling domestic abuse.

“I want to say a huge well done to all those who were involved in the operation. I hope that by shining this light on domestic abuse it encourages more people to speak out about the issues they are facing.”

The Constabulary was helped during Operation Guardians by domestic abuse charity MyCWA – which provides emotional, personal and practical support to families across the county affected by domestic abuse.

Whilst perpetrators were in the cells, MyCWA spoke to them and highlighted their Lifeline programme that looks at unhealthy behaviours in relationships. The programme also offers practical support to evoke lasting change in domestic abuse perpetrators.

John Dwyer added: “In my Police and Crime Plan I’ve made my stance on tackling domestic abuse very clear. The importance of working with partner agencies such as MyCWA, will help to root out domestic abuse on all fronts across the county.

“Children must also not be forgotten victims of domestic abuse and we should not underestimate the impact this trauma can have on them in later life.

“I am committed to working with partners to understand Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the links to involvement in the criminal justice system as adults.”
