Congleton will come together on Sunday 8th November to remember those who have served and sacrificed their lives in conflict at the town’s annual Remembrance Service.
Organised by Congleton Town Council and the Congleton Branch of the Royal British Legion, the event brings together veterans, serving personnel, uniformed groups, community organisations and members of the public to pay their respects.
The parade will assemble at West Street Car Park from 10am and depart at 10.30am, proceeding to the Cenotaph on Lawton Street. The parade is expected to arrive at approximately 10.50am, when the outdoor service and wreath-laying ceremony will take place.
The Mayor of Congleton, Councillor Suzy Firkin, said:
“Remembrance Sunday is an important opportunity for our community to come together, honour those who have served and sacrificed their lives, and reflect on the lasting impact of conflict. This year, we will also recognise the 85th anniversary of the Prinses Irene Brigade, the Dutch regiment that was based in Congleton during the Second World War. I encourage everyone to join us in remembering and paying their respects.”
As part of the ceremony, wreaths will be laid at the statue of Treo, Congleton’s much-loved war dog memorial. Treo’s handler and a veteran from the Prinses Irene Brigade will pay tribute to Treo and all animals who have served alongside the Armed Forces.
Visitors can also explore Congleton’s historic connections with the Netherlands at a free public exhibition hosted by The Darji Expression at Congleton Town Hall on Sunday 8 November, from 9.30am to 2pm. The exhibition features Ramesh Darji’s Dutch and English period paintings, including his celebrated poppy paintings. Everyone is welcome.
The community is also invited to attend the Armistice Day Service at the Cenotaph on Wednesday 11 November at 10.50am. Congleton Town Hall will be illuminated with poppies as part of the town’s commemorations.
The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal starts on Thursday 22 October. Support the appeal and purchase your official Poppy merchandise from the Congleton Branch of the Royal British Legion.
