Council to invest in an improved and enhanced library service for Northwich residents

Cheshire West and Chester Council are considering the best options available for investing in Northwich library to deliver a service that is universally accessible to all and safeguards the future of the existing Grade II listed Brunner Public Library building for future generations.

The current facility on Witton Street in the town centre is much loved and well used by residents of Northwich and beyond.  Investment from the Council will deliver an accessible and enhanced library service that reflects the needs of the town into the future.

Cabinet Member for Housing, Regeneration and Growth, Cllr Richard Beacham said:

“The Council is committed to investing in the historic Brunner Public Library to restore the building to its former glory.

“We are also exploring the possibility of relocating the library service to Barons Quay, although it is important to emphasise that no decision has been taken yet.

“Such a move could deliver significant community benefit, such as a facility that is universally accessible, co-located with other Council services or adult education offers, as well as freeing up the existing building for alternative community uses.

“However, there are many factors that need to be considered – including the views of local people and businesses in the town. Once the council is in a position to formerly consult on any future plans, we will work with the Town Council and Northwich BID to make sure people can have their say.

“At a time when other councils are closing libraries and community facilities, I am proud that this council is continuing to invest in modern library services, finding ways to align them with educational and cultural experiences, and re-imagining how we use community space in new and exciting ways.”
