Easter boost for hospice as local firm steps up with sweet donation

A Cheshire hospice facing major funding pressures is set for an Easter boost after a kind-hearted local firm donated dozens of chocolate eggs.

Lock Stock Self Storage has handed over 50 Easter eggs to support patients and families at St Luke’s Hospice in Winsford over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The family-run business, which has also opened a new site in Crewe, said they were keen to bring some Easter cheer while backing a vital community service described as “extraordinary” by those who use it.

Lock Stock’s site manager Richard Warner explained:

“The care and support the hospice provides for people in this community when they need it most is extraordinary.

"It has been here for 37 years and has become an essential service for the people of Cheshire.

“Many people in the community highly value the work that goes on at the hospice and as a member of that community, Lock Stock is delighted to have been able to support St Luke’s this Easter.”

The hospice’s 10-bed Inpatient Unit provided care for 370 people last year, while its Day Hospice supported more than 2,500 patients.

Dan Harrison, corporate fundraising officer at St Luke’s, said:

“Easter is always a special time at the hospice with lots of families and friends visiting their loved ones who are staying with us.

“Lock Stock’s kind donation of chocolate eggs is a lovely surprise and will be enjoyed by our patients and service users.

"We run a special bereavement support group for children called the Phoenix Group and we will ensure they receive some of the eggs too.

“We are so grateful to the support from Lock Stock and our business community.

"Thanks to the support of local companies we are able to continue providing our special care and support to those families who need us.”

It costs over £6 million to run the hospice every year, of which St Luke’s receives just 14 per cent funding from the government, making it one of the least funded adult hospices in the country.

Dan added:

“So many people have a strong connection to this hospice and have such lovely stories about the support the hospice has given.

"I feel really privileged to see that support, and the difference it makes, every day.

"Our supporters and fundraisers are fantastic, it is an understatement to say that we would not be here without them.”

Lock Stock’s site at Nat Lane in Winsford has 224 storage units, a mix of 10-foot, 20-foot and 40-foot containers, whilst its Crewe facility opened in January and is expanding quickly with a variety of sizes on a site repurposed following a major fire in August 2024.

The company, founded in Denbigh in North Wales in 2000, has over 5,700 storage units providing more than five million cubic feet of space at more than 35 storage parks across North and Mid Wales, the border counties and the north west.

They estimate that over 70 per cent of their units are rented by people moving house or keeping treasured possessions but nearly 30%, almost 2,000, are used by a variety of businesses for storing materials, stock and equipment.
