Flag Lane Link opens

Access to Crewe’s town centre improved last week, with the opening of the Flag Lane Link.

The completed works are part of a package of projects being supported by the government’s Future High Streets Fund, following the council’s successful bid for a total of £14.1 million of funding.

The Flag Lane Link significantly improves access to the town centre, reducing congestion and journey times in and out of Crewe by linking Dunwoody Way to Delamere Street via Flag Lane. There was also an upgrade to the zebra crossing, which is in place on Flag Lane.

Councillor Craig Browne, deputy leader and chair of Cheshire East Council’s highways and transport committee, said:

“We are delighted to be completing these works ahead of schedule, enabling road users to access the town more safely during this holiday season. 

“It was also very positive that in this instance, we were able to keep access for cyclists and pedestrians available throughout the works supporting active travel, though it is important to note that it’s not always possible to do this for safety reasons.”

Councillor Anthony Critchley, ward member for Crewe Central, said:

“It was great to be able to liaise closely with highways colleagues on this important project, especially when it came to providing all the solutions regarding drainage and the lighting. 

“As Councillor Browne has already referenced, it was brilliant to see the active travel aspect of the project recognised properly as well.”

State-of the-art junction controls are currently being installed at the Wistaston Road, Edleston Road and Nantwich Road areas in another scheme supported by the Future High Streets Fund, while further projects have also been approved in Crewe. 

Planning permission has been granted for the Southern Gateway Pedestrian and Cycling Connectivity Scheme – providing a new pedestrian and cycling link between High Street and the Crewe Lifestyle Centre.
