Congleton Town Council is calling on residents to help decide how Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding should be invested to improve life in our town.
The CIL is money collected from housing and commercial developers, passed on to the Town Council by Cheshire East Council, and ringfenced to benefit the local community. It can fund improvements such as parks, play areas, sports facilities, cultural projects, and safer public spaces.
To date, Congleton Town Council has received £21,684 in CIL funding.
At the Annual Town Meeting in May 2025, town councillors discussed possible projects with residents and agreed on three priority proposals:
Pedestrian Safety Gates – Gates on Bridge Street and Little Street to protect walkers and cyclists during pedestrianised hours (10am–4pm).
Public Realm Improvements – Refurbishing and maintaining bins, benches, signage, and other street furniture across the town centre.
Public Toilets – A contribution towards refurbishing the town centre public toilets (once legal transfer from Cheshire East has been achieved).
Congleton Town Mayor, Cllr Robert Brittain, said:
“This is an exciting chance for residents to shape how development money is spent. The shortlisted projects will bring real and visible improvements, but we want your views to guide what happens first. Please take part – your voice matters.”
The survey closes 30th September 2025.
