Highways improvement schemes to take place in Nantwich

Various road improvement schemes are to take place in Nantwich later this month and into September.

An emergency utilities repair scheme is also taking place, but the council’s highways service has taken steps to minimise the impact on local events, including the Nantwich Food Festival.

With the summer months the best period in which to deliver road improvement works, when the roads are quieter, the council is pressing ahead with a small number of schemes that will address some outstanding issues.

Work is already underway to install a new signal-controlled pedestrian crossing on Peter Destapleigh Way. This will enhance road safety for school children and will be completed before the start of the new term. Resurfacing work for Peter Destapleigh Way and Newcastle Road is taking place but the works are expected to be completed prior to the Nantwich Food Festival on 2 September. 

The upgrade to traffic signals at the junction of Fairfax Drive/Waterlode and Reaseheath Way takes place from 22 August – 1 September, and that too will be completed before the food festival begins on the 2 September.

Major footway improvements continue in Beam Street (pictured) through to October under a road closure. While this cannot be suspended over the Bank Holiday and for the festival, the works are phased and access to shops is being maintained throughout.  Similarly, emergency works by United Utilities to repair a water main between Welsh Row and First Wood Street, resulting in road closures, cannot be suspended due to the urgent need for the repair to address potential loss of service, therefore residents and visitors to the town can expect some delays in that locality.

Cheshire East Highways are working with contractors to minimise disruption in the town as much as possible and have instructed that all temporary signals are manually controlled to avoid any potential congestion issues during what is expected to be a busy period for the town, although three of the above schemes are due to be completed before the start of the food festival.
