A man has been jailed for 12 years and 10 months after being found guilty of seriously assaulting his own father in Middlewich.
Martin Mew, of Middlewich, was jailed for 12 years and 10 months on Wednesday 25th March at Chester Crown Court and will serve at least 8 years in prison.
The 38-year-old had previously been found guilty of Section 18 assault on Friday 16th January 2026. He was found not guilty of attempted murder, with which he had also been charged.
Over the course of his four-day trial, the court heard that at around 2.11am on Sunday 9th March 2025, Cheshire Police responded to reports of an ongoing incident in which a 68-year-old man had been stabbed by Mew.
Officers swiftly attended the address and found the victim had sustained serious injuries, with a significant amount of blood spread across both the inside and outside of the property.
Also in the property was Martin Mew, who was found with his hands covered in blood. He was promptly arrested and taken into custody.
Enquiries at the scene uncovered that an argument between Mew and his father had broken out after he was found to have taken his father’s medication for himself.
The altercation quickly turned physical, with Mew stabbing his father several times.
The victim was subsequently taken to Royal Stoke Hospital, where his condition was stabilised. He had three confirmed stab wounds: one on the right-hand side of his chest, one between his shoulder blades, and one in his back close to his heart.
In custody, Mew was interviewed by detectives in relation to the incident. He answered “no comment” to all questions put to him.
He was later charged with the offences.
Alongside his custodial sentence, Mew has been handed an indefinite restraining order against the victim.
Upon his release from prison, Mew will remain on licence for four years.
Detective Sergeant Mitch Allford, of CID Reactive East, said:
"It is clear that Martin Mew is an impulsive individual who, after being caught stealing medication not meant for him, chose to respond with extreme violence rather than owning up to his wrongdoing.
"When asked to explain his side of the story when interviewed by detectives, Mr Mew again refused to account for his actions. This, paired with the fact that attending officers found him with literal blood on his hands, will have ultimately led the jury to find him guilty of this serious assault against his own parent.
“Had Mew’s blows been just centimetres away from where they initially landed, we could quite easily have been dealing with a murder investigation. I am very glad that this is not the case and that the victim is well on the road to physical recovery from this truly traumatic ordeal.
“Mr Mew will now be spending the best part of a decade behind bars as a consequence of his actions and, even when he is released in 2034, he will remain under licence, an indefinite restraining order, and the watchful eye of police to ensure that he does not harm anyone again."
Detective Constable Ian Halliwell of CID Reactive East, who was the officer in the case added:
“This was a senseless act of violence that has shattered a family. When we respond to a domestic incident, we expect the home to be a sanctuary, yet here it became a crime scene. To have an adult son turn a weapon on his own father, causing multiple, life-threatening stab wounds is truly harrowing.
"The impact of this trauma cannot be overstated. A home that should have been a place of safety has been permanently tainted by this violence. The psychological scars left on the victim and his wife, who watched her family implode in such a horrific manner, will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
"Justice has been served today with a substantial custodial sentence and a lifetime Restraining Order, which reflects the severity of the act and the protection the public requires.”
