Musica Nova’s 26/27 Season opens on Saturday 12th September 2026, 7:30pm at All Saints' Church in Cheadle Hulme.
The programme brings together three composers from the vibrant musical world of eighteenth-century Europe, culminating in one of Mozart's most celebrated symphonies.
The concert opens with J.C. Bach's Grand Overture (Symphony) in D major. The youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, J.C. Bach became one of the most influential composers of the early Classical era. Known in London as the "English Bach", his elegant and graceful style helped shape the development of the Classical symphony and even influenced the young Mozart. The overture is full of energy, wit and melodic charm, providing a brilliant opening to the evening.
Musica Nova are delighted to welcome bassoonists Kevin O'Sullivan and Dan Gore as the soloists for Vanhal's Concerto for Two Bassoons. Czech composer Vanhal was a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart and one of the most respected composers working in Vienna during the late eighteenth century. His concerto is a rare opportunity to hear the bassoon take centre stage. Combining virtuosic passages with lyrical melodies and playful dialogue between the two soloists, the work reveals both the expressive warmth and surprising agility of the instrument.
The concert finale is Mozart's Symphony No. 36 in C major, "Linz". Written in just a few days during a stop in the Austrian city of Linz in 1783, the symphony is one of Mozart's most inspiring orchestral achievements. The majestic opening immediately commands attention, while the elegant slow movement, lively minuet and sparkling finale demonstrate Mozart at the height of his powers. Rich in invention and dramatic contrast, the "Linz" Symphony remains one of the jewels of the Classical repertoire.
Musica Nova will be directed by Anne Bass and Jem Bradley.
The concert takes place at All Saints’ Church on Church Road in Cheadle Hulme, SK8 7JL on Saturday 12th September 2026 at 7:30pm.
