Stockport residents invited to find out more in advance of Greek Street bridge closure

A second public information event is being held ahead of the major work to rebuild the Greek Street bridge.

Scheduled for Wednesday 5th February 2025, the event will take place between 4-7pm at Stockport’s Age UK hub, which is located next to the bridge*.

More than £16m is being invested to replace the bridge that takes the Greek Street roundabout over the West Coast Main Line.

The original bridge, which was constructed in 1958, has reached the end of its life and needs to be replaced for the safety of road users and pedestrians on the bridge’s surface and the rail passengers below. 

To carry out the work safely, the Greek Street bridge and some nearby sections of road will be closed from 31st March 2025 for one year.

At the event, residents can meet the project team, learn about proposed diversionary routes, and ask any questions they have about the work.

Cllr Grace Baynham, cabinet member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services, said: 

“It was great to see so many residents turn up to the first engagement session that was held in December and to listen to those who offered suggestions ahead of the work starting in late March.

“Unfortunately, we know that the work to replace the bridge on Greek Street will cause a considerable amount of disruption for 12 months but the engagement sessions being held by Network Rail and partners will provide assurance and the latest information on this vital piece of infrastructure work taking place in our town centre.”

Over Christmas, the team began preparations for the bridge’s closure and eventual demolition. A scaffold bridge was installed to divert important utility services from underneath the road surface, so they can continue to serve the community throughout the project.

Following the road closure in March, work will be carried out to the railway over the Easter bank holiday ahead of the main work over the summer.

In August, the bridge will be dismantled and replaced over 21 days. During this time, there will be no train services running through Stockport.
