RSPCA officers were called to the Northwich area, Cheshire, in January after concerns were raised about the welfare of an Akita at an address in the town.
A skinny dog who was found collapsed in her own faeces has made a miraculous transformation in just a few months.
RSPCA inspector Caren Goodman-James was extremely worried about Sasha when she saw her.
She said: “Akitas are big, heavy, powerful dogs but despite her thick, fluffy coat you could see Sasha’s whole spine and all of her ribs. It was devastating.
“She weighed just 18kg which is nothing for a normally big, strong dog. It was touch and go whether she’d pull through and vets weren’t sure she’d make it.”
Thanks to round-the-clock care and lots of TLC Sasha slowly built up her strength and started to put on weight. Now, the happy and healthy dog - who has been in the care of RSPCA Wirral & Chester branch - weighs 37kg.
Kay Hawthorn, Wirral Animal Centre manager, said: “Sasha is a sweetheart, she is doing really well, and thoroughly enjoying the extra time she is getting in the paddock in the sun.
“She has gone from strength to strength and her real personality has come out and we can see what a lovely girl she is. She loves to play ball, and especially loves spending time with us humans despite the way some have treated her previously.”
Sasha is looking for a home where she’ll be the only pet. She’s looking for an experienced home with owners who know about Akitas. She could live with older children.
Anyone who is interested in finding out more about Sasha should fill in this form. She will not be available for rehoming until the lockdown is lifted. Staff want her to meet her new owners on numerous occasions before sending her home and make them aware of her training plan so feel this would be best done once the Government’s restrictions have been lifted.
