Become a firefighter – change lives, save lives

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has announced the opening of its wholetime firefighter recruitment process from 26th August and is calling on individuals from all walks of life to consider a career like no other - in a Service like no other.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is pleased to announce the opening of its wholetime firefighter recruitment process from 26th August and is calling on individuals from all walks of life to consider a career like no other - in a Service like no other.

Firefighting isn’t just about emergencies; in fact, only around 4% of the role involves responding to incidents. Today’s firefighter is just as likely to be educating young people, advising local businesses to improve safety, or delivering life-saving prevention advice in our communities. It’s a dynamic, rewarding career where no two days are the same.

Chief Fire Officer Alex Waller said:

“We’re proud to serve every part of Cheshire, and we’re building a workforce that reflects the communities we protect. If you’re thinking about a career with us, we’re looking for people who care about others, who want to make a difference, and who believe that everyone deserves to be understood, supported, and kept safe. This is a Service where you can be yourself, where your voice matters, and where you’ll have a fair opportunity to thrive. You won’t just respond to emergencies, you’ll stand alongside our communities, build trust, and make a lasting impact every single day. If you share our values and our vision of a Cheshire with no deaths, injuries or damage from fires or other emergencies, we want to hear from you.”

At Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, our people are at the heart of everything we do. With great pay and benefits, strong staff networks and support, and clear career pathways that extend beyond the fire station into roles across prevention, protection and leadership, there’s a place for everyone in the Service.

Whether you're just starting out or looking for a new direction, this is your chance to join a modern, inclusive organisation that’s dedicated to its people and the communities it serves.

What’s in it for you?

  • Competitive salary and career growth: Earn over £38,800 within 18 months of joining and benefit from opportunities to move into leadership positions and specialist roles. From operational training to meaningful roles in prevention and protection, and more, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service supports you to grow to your full potential as a firefighter and beyond.
  • Top-tier benefits: Including up to 35 days’ annual leave, family-friendly policies, maternity/adoption pay up to a year, flexible working, free parking, on-site gyms, and vibrant inclusion networks.
