Cheshire East Council is encouraging residents and visitors to plan ahead this summer, as an extensive programme of roadworks is set to take place during the school holidays.
This follows the announcement of a record £53 million investment in the borough’s transport infrastructure for 2025/26 - the largest in a decade. The funding will focus on improving road conditions, enhancing safety, and prioritising routes that have the greatest impact on local communities.
Most of the council’s road improvement schemes are planned for the summer, when the weather is usually warmer and drier - ideal conditions for fixing and resurfacing roads. Since roads are typically quieter during the school holidays, it’s also a practical time to carry out essential works with less disruption.
Planned works across the borough include:
- Oxford Road, Macclesfield - resurfacing works;
- Remer Street, Crewe - resurfacing works;
- Back Lane, Congleton - micro surfacing works;
- Earlsway, Macclesfield - footway improvements;
- Swinburne Drive, Crewe - footway improvements.
Councillor Mark Goldsmith, chair of Cheshire East Council’s highways and transport committee, said:
“We know roadworks can be disruptive, and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience they may cause.
“This £53 million investment is the biggest we’ve made in ten years. While it won’t fix every road, it means we can make real improvements in the places that need it most - helping to make everyday journeys safer and smoother.
“We plan this work carefully and coordinate with utility companies and other partners to reduce disruption as much as possible. By carrying out much of it over the summer, when roads are quieter, we’re doing our best to keep things moving while delivering long-term benefits.
“I’d also like to thank our highways teams for the work they do, often in challenging conditions, and ask everyone to be considerate while they’re out on the network.
“I urge drivers to please plan ahead, check before you travel, and allow extra time where needed. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we carry out these essential improvements to our roads.”
