Crewe is seeing a wave of community-driven financial empowerment thanks to the continued work of West Cheshire Credit Union (WCCU), which is helping residents take control of their finances, save safely, and access affordable loans.
Operating as a not-for-profit cooperative, WCCU exists to serve its members rather than shareholders. In Crewe, this means offering practical, friendly support for anyone looking to manage their money better, avoid high-interest debt, and build financial resilience.
Over the past year, WCCU has:
- Supported more than 350 Crewe residents with affordable loans that protect them from payday lenders and loan sharks.
- Helped local families save, ensuring their money works for them.
- Delivered financial wellbeing workshops in community centres, schools, and local workplaces, giving people the tools to budget, save, and plan ahead.
- Partnered with local charities and housing providers to provide tailored financial solutions for people in challenging circumstances.
Neil Jay - Chief Executive at West Cheshire Credit Union said:
“We’re proud of the difference we’re making in Crewe and has all been made possible by the support of Bentley Motors, Cheshire Community Foundation and the Guiness Partnership.” “Our focus is on helping people take small, positive steps that add up to long-term financial security. The success stories we see every week are proof that community-based finance really works and by bringing our services to citizens of Crewe we are making strides into combating the worrying growth of loan sharks and illegal lenders in the area.”
The Credit Union has also embraced digital technology to make services more accessible, allowing members to join online, manage their accounts through an easy-to-use app, and receive quick loan decisions without losing the personal touch that makes WCCU unique.
WCCU is calling on more local residents to consider joining the Credit Union — whether to save, borrow responsibly, or simply support a service that keeps money circulating in the local economy.
