Congleton residents gearing up to cheer on top international cyclists

The Tour of Britain (TOB) will be wheeling through Congleton on Thursday 9 September taking a route through Astbury, Mossley, Reades Lane and Timbersbrook before heading out on the A54 Buxton Road towards Bosley.

Residents can look forward to seeing some top cyclists in action, including some just back from the Olympics. Mark Cavendish (winner of the most stages in modern TOB history), Tokyo 2020 medallists Wout van Aert, Ethan Hayter and Rohan Dennis along with reigning Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) road world champion Julian Alaphilippe will all be seen on the roads of Congleton as stage five of the tour passes through.

The race will turn off the A34 Newcastle Road and into Peel Lane, Astbury around 12.20pm – 12.30pm- there will be a sprint race along Leek Road around 5 minutes later, before the route takes the TOB along Reades Lane and a king of the mountain race along Under Rainow Road finishing at Blacky Bank between 12.27pm and 12.37pm.

The race will then continue along Pegley Lane, Middle Lane and onto A54 Buxton Road – it is expected to leave Congleton sometime between 12.33pm and 12.44pm depending on the speed of the race. Times are a little uncertain as the riders will have cycled 17 miles before they get to Congleton.

Alderley Park will host the stage start with riders crossing the finish line in Warrington, having completed the 94.6 mile leg. The 2021 champion will be crowned in Aberdeen on Sunday 12 September.
