Congleton Town Council, in partnership with the Royal British Legion and All Saints Congleton, will mark the 80th Anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day with a short commemorative service at the Cenotaph on Lawton Street on Friday 15th August at 11am.
The public are warmly invited to attend the service and pay tribute to all those who served and sacrificed in the Far East and Pacific during the Second World War.
The Town Mayor, Cllr Robert Brittain said:
"VJ Day reminds us of the courage and resilience of all those who served in the Far East, many of whom endured unimaginable hardship. As we mark the 80th anniversary, it’s important that we come together as a community to remember and honour their sacrifices. I encourage residents to join us in paying tribute to this often-overlooked chapter of our shared history."
This year’s event offers a meaningful opportunity for reflection and gratitude, as the nation commemorates the official end of World War II and those who fought for peace. The town council encourages residents, visitors, and local businesses to join in observing the national two-minute silence at 12 noon.
To mark the occasion, a specially designed floral plaque has been created by Streetscape gardeners in Congleton Park, and bunting has been placed throughout the town centre as a visual reminder of this important anniversary.
