Congleton Unites in Record Numbers for Remembrance

Crowds of proud onlookers lined the streets of Congleton on Sunday to pay their respects as the town came together for the annual Remembrance Parade and Service at the Cenotaph on Lawton Street.

The event, which honours those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, saw one of the largest turnouts in recent memory.

The parade, led by the 2493 Sqn Alsager Air Cadets Band, featured an impressive line-up of veterans, youth groups, emergency services, civic dignitaries, and members of the armed forces. The outdoor service at the Cenotaph was conducted by Rev. Ian Enticott of All Saints Congleton, with Steve Evans of the Congleton Branch of the Royal British Legion serving as Master of Ceremonies and Parade Marshal.

This year, representatives from almost 50 local organisations were called upon to lay wreaths in tribute. Moving moments included Chris Weir, Bagpiper, performing Amazing Grace, and the Last Post, played with precision by Michael Whitehurst. Readings were delivered by the Mayor’s Cadet Haru Pepper and veterans Russ Mein and Dom Rogers. The bells of St Peter’s Church rang out proudly to welcome the parade, thanks to the dedication of the church’s bell ringers.

A particularly special part of the event was the presence of representatives from the Princess Irene Brigade, who travelled from the Netherlands to take part. The historic connection between the Brigade and Congleton dates back to 1941, when young Dutch soldiers were stationed in the town after escaping occupied Holland to continue the fight for their homeland’s liberation.

Congleton Town Mayor, Cllr Robert Brittain said:

“It was deeply moving to see so many people, young and old, come together to honour those who gave everything for our freedom. The turnout this year reflects Congleton’s strong sense of community and remembrance. We are especially proud to welcome back our Dutch friends from the Princess Irene Brigade — a reminder of the lasting bonds forged in times of great sacrifice.”

Following the service, a reception was held at the town hall, where guests, veterans, and youth representatives shared moments of reflection. Mossley C of E Primary School Choir performed beautifully, providing a meaningful and emotional close to the day’s events.

230 (Congleton) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets also showcased their creativity with a striking handmade flag made from camouflage netting, wire, and recycled bottles to form poppies. When complete, it will feature over 600 poppies — one for every name inscribed on the Cenotaph — symbolising remembrance through sustainability, teamwork, and respect.

In a fitting tribute, Congleton Town Council illuminated the Town Hall with a striking poppy display during the evenings. The town council would like to thank Whitakker and Biggs for housing the projection equipment that made the display possible. The Prince of Wales also contributed to commemorations with a poignant poppy projection on the Cenotaph, creating a powerful visual reminder of remembrance that resonated across the town.

Congleton Town Council organised the parade and service in association with the Congleton Branch of the Royal British Legion. The Town Council funded the road closures, sound system, band, reception and other expenses associated with the event.
