Cheshire East Council has been awarded Fostering Friendly accreditation by national charity The Fostering Network as part of its drive to recruit more foster carers.
To become recognised, the council have implemented a policy to make a real difference to employees who foster, and support others in becoming approved foster carers themselves.
They now offer a flexible working pattern to foster carers and those going through the application process, who can access a minimum of five days extra paid leave for their fostering commitments. These involve meetings with social workers and other agencies, attending training, settling young people into their new home and more.
Councillor Carol Bulman, chair of Cheshire East Council’s children and families committee, said:
“Being recognised as a Fostering Friendly employer is fantastic news. It is an important step in making fostering more appealing and encouraging more families to join our fostering community across the borough.
“The role of a foster carer is such an important one and we will support people, including our own staff, in any way we can to take on this vital work. Many people believe they can't foster while working full-time, but this isn't true. Some flexibility in their work schedule may be necessary to meet the child's needs.
“Fostering a child can be challenging, but carers say it’s one of the most rewarding experiences they have ever had. If you believe you have what it takes to positively impact the life of a child or young person, we encourage you to get in touch.”
The Fostering Network is the UK’s leading fostering charity. Their executive chair, Mervyn Erskine said:
“Becoming a Fostering Friendly employer is something to be really proud of. Foster carers are the bedrock of children’s social care – for the difference they make to the lives of children. It is important that this vital role is not only recognised, but also encouraged by their employers.
“By supporting existing foster carers and promoting the role to other employees, this helps to build on the thousands of extra fostering households needed in the UK, for the children who need them most.

Nationally there is a shortage of 9,265 fostering households, and Cheshire East is no exception. The fostering community is open to people from all walks of life, no matter your age, gender, relationship status or sexual orientation.
