Value of Cheshire East visitor economy up by more than £100m

New figures show that the value of Cheshire East’s visitor economy has grown by 11.6% in the last year.

The latest economic impact data shows that the value of the sector rose to £1.12bn in 2024 and that Cheshire East welcomed a million more visitors than in 2024 than in 2023 – demonstrating that the borough remains a key destination for attractions, food and drink and relaxation at its best. 

The figures for Cheshire East are part of a wider even more positive story that shows that the value of the visitor economy has exceeded £4.32bn across Cheshire and Warrington – the first time this figure has been passed since prior to the pandemic.

Cheshire East attracts visitors from across the UK and internationally thanks to its combined offer of culture, nature and history. These include: 

• Jodrell Bank’s UNESCO world heritage site – an internationally recognised centre for science and astronomy;
• Combermere Abbey – celebrated for its weddings, heritage, woodlands and visitor experience;
• Devafest at Cholmondeley – a family-friendly four-day festival in August, which will be headlined this year by James Morrison, Ronan Keating and Jessie J;
• Extensive internationally renowned walking routes such as the Gritstone Trail, which continue to attract outdoor enthusiasts; and
• Picturesque market towns and villages renowned for their independent shops, vibrant food and drink scenes and strong community character

One of the area’s crown jewels,Tatton Park, a heritage visitor attraction, also experienced a record increase in visitor numbers – particularly over the summer period. 

The combination of a brilliant new family experience at Tatton’s farm and gardens, based around the well-known ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’ children's book, combined with a great value ‘Parkland Pass’ promotion, meant that Tatton more than doubled its number of visitors with family tickets, up by more than 90%.

It’s hoped that visitor numbers will continue to grow even further this year with a new landmark exhibition: ‘Beyond the View: Canaletto at Tatton Park’ exploring the fascinating link between world-renowned artist Canaletto and Samuel Egerton, Tatton Park’s 18th century owner.

For the first time, visitors can immerse themselves in Samuel’s story and stunning Canaletto paintings, experience innovative digital art inspired by Canaletto’s work and discover never-before-seen treasures from Tatton’s Italian collection. The exhibition opens on Saturday 28th March and runs on selected dates up to 1st November.
