Residents across Cheshire East can now renew their garden waste subscription or sign up for the first time for collections in 2027.
The council recognises that some residents have experienced disruption to garden waste collections during 2026 and apologises to those affected. Work is under way to stabilise the service and improve collection reliability ahead of the 2027 subscription year. The council is reviewing its refund policy as part of this work.
New automatic renewal arrangements are also being introduced, reducing the need for residents to manually renew their subscription each year.
The council's garden waste recycling scheme provides fortnightly collections of garden waste, helping residents recycle grass cuttings, leaves, hedge trimmings and other green waste from their homes.
Residents who are already signed up to the scheme can now renew their subscription for 2027, while new customers can also register to receive collections from January.
Almost 100,000 residents subscribed to the scheme in 2026. New for 2027, subscriptions will automatically renew for the following year unless residents choose to opt out through the council's online portal. The annual charge is £74, with a 25 per cent reduction available for residents receiving qualifying benefits.
Councillor David Jefferay, Cheshire East Council cabinet member for environment, sustainability and waste management, said:
"I’d like to apologise to residents who have been affected by collection disruptions this year.
“We have put plans in place to stabilise collections and improve reliability, helping residents receive the standard of service they deserve.
"The scheme offers fortnightly collections throughout the year and all garden waste collected is composted, helping residents recycle their green waste in an environmentally responsible way.
"We're also introducing automatic renewal for 2028, making it easier for residents to continue receiving collections year after year without needing to remember to renew their subscription.”
Once subscribed, residents will receive a welcome pack containing a subscription sticker displaying their address and unique subscription number.
Residents are encouraged to attach the new pink sticker to the back of their garden bin (handle side) as soon as it arrives. Garden bins without a valid subscription sticker may not be emptied.
Residents who subscribed to the scheme this year and have a current email address registered with the council will receive a reminder email with details of how to renew.
