Cheshire East Council is asking for views on a new planning document that seeks to enhance the preservation and management of the borough’s rich architectural and historical heritage.
The draft Heritage and Conservation Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) supports the development of a ‘local list’ so that future developments can respect and contribute to Cheshire East’s unique character.
Cheshire East’s local list currently features more than 350 entries including buildings, monuments and landscapes with examples across pubs, churches, houses, guideposts, bandstands, railway stations, farms, mills, schoolhouses, cinemas, banks and even World War II pill boxes.
The Heritage and Conservation SPD sets out a new approach to ensure treasured local heritage can be identified, assessed, and given the right protections.
The document is designed to ensure that Cheshire East’s local list of important heritage assets can be easily updated. It provides guidance on the development of historic buildings within designated conservation areas as well as outlining best practices for preserving the integrity of the borough’s heritage.
Councillor Mick Warren, chair of Cheshire East Council’s environment and communities committee, said:
“We are so proud of the borough’s heritage and recognise its value in shaping the character and quality of the area. Cheshire East is a very special place with 76 conservation areas and thousands of Grade I and II listed buildings.
"This new planning document reinforces our commitment to preserving the borough’s heritage. It provides clear and practical guidance on how to identify heritage assets, along with the vital role of helping to protect our beautiful borough for future generations."
The Heritage and Conservation SPD is available for public review and consultation until 11th June 2025.
Residents, developers and other stakeholders are invited to give feedback to help shape the council’s efforts in protecting and conserving the borough’s heritage.
