Puddle Ducks Mid Cheshire were in awe recently after one of their swimmers put his skills in action, during an incident on holiday.
Dexter Moorhouse (3) from Stockport, joined Puddle Ducks only last year and during a recent holiday with his family called upon his Puddle Ducks learnings to help him when he fell into a swimming pool fully clothed.
Dexter, who swims in the Little Dippers class at Seashell in Cheadle Hulme, is taught by Dawn Owen who commented: “We are all immensely proud of Dexter’s calmness in a scary situation. Dexter fell in fully clothed but used the skills he’d learnt in class to help him feel confident in handling the situation. Dexter has worked on a number of skills in class, that would have prepared him to stay calm in an incident, such as learning to jump in, resurface and swim back to a point of safety.
Dawn continued: “Dexter has also taken part in our Pyjama Weeks, which provide children with the opportunity to see how it would feel to be in the water fully clothed, following an accidental submersion/fall into water, showing them that they can still swim and practice turning, something that proved invaluable for Dexter”.
Dexter’s mum Jane commented: “When Dexter fell in, he didn’t panic, he just turned around, grabbed the side of the pool and pulled himself out. He was amazing and knew exactly what to do. I think this is testament to what a fantastic teacher Dawn is”.
Dexter’s calmness in a crisis comes at a time of year when water safety is more important than ever for Puddle Ducks, when children are spending more time around water either in back gardens or on holiday.
Rachel Bateson of Puddle Ducks Mid Cheshire commented: “As a swim school it’s incredibly important to us that we teach water safety to the children, so that if they ever do find themselves in a situation similar to Dexter, they’ll know exactly what to do in order to return to safety”.
Puddle Ducks provides award winning swimming classes for children from birth to 10 years old. Teachers focus on creating a nurturing environment, which supports independent swimming for children of all abilities.
