Jez Hellard is a teller of gripping tales and songs full of depth. He is a fine guitarist and an extraordinary harmonica player – honing these skills over the last 20 years, travelled around the world, including performing in some unlikely places. His band, The Djukella Orchestra, featuring Nye Parsons, one of the most captivating double bassists on the folk scene, play contemporary folk music from jigs, reels and rebel ballards to tango, rhumba and reggae.
According to Folk Radio UK, “Jes has the type of voice that impels you to listen. Ridiculously enjoyable… an unequivocal thumbs up.”
Councillor Louise Gittins, Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: “This dynamic folk band is full of passion and virtuoso musicianship and I’m delighted that they will be playing at this year’s Salt Works Sessions at the Lion Salt Works. The Museum’s unique historic setting continues to be an on-going success as a folk venue, lending an intimacy and atmosphere to all performances.”
The Lion Salt Works Museum has won ten awards since opening in 2015 after a four-year £10m restoration, including winning the National Lottery’s top award for heritage projects in 2016. Cheshire’s Lion Salt Works Museum tells the story of salt in fun and interactive displays, including a sound and light show that evokes the steam rising from the giant salt pans. In addition to a children’s play area, shop, butterfly garden and café, there are also year-round activities. These range from Touring Rural Arts plays, children’s craft activities to events featuring historic steam events. On 4 June, the Museum will holding a Platinum Jubilee tea Garden Party with music through the decades as well as another ‘live’ music event.
