Local author, Cecilia Lyon, recently met Macclesfield’s MP, David Rutley, to tell him more about her latest book “Adolphe Valette & L.S Lowry”.
The book is the definitive study of the artistic links between iconic artist, L.S Lowry, and his French tutor, Adolphe Valette.
Lowry has credited the strong influence of his teacher, Valette, in his artistic work and in enabling him to capture the industrial landscape in Manchester and the north of England in his own unique style. The new book describes their artistic journeys from the time that they met at the Municipal School of Art in Manchester in 1905. It has been extensively researched in the archives of many institutions, including the Special Collections of the Manchester School of Art.
Mrs Lyon’s book includes many hitherto unknown facts about the artists and also has more than a hundred carefully chosen illustrations. Signed copies are available from the Waterstones branch in Macclesfield and further details about the book can be found here:

Belgian born Mrs Lyon is a graduate of the University of Brussels. She discovered the paintings of Adolphe Valette when she moved to Manchester and developed a passion for his work. This led to Mrs Lyon publishing a biography of the artist in 2006 and then curating a very successful exhibition at The Lowry, Salford in 2011-12: “Adolphe Valette, a Pioneer of Impressionism in Manchester”. In a wide-ranging career, Valette also provided designs for the silk industry in Lyon, France.
After meeting Cecilia, David said, “I was delighted to learn more about the artistic links between these two talented artists. We are rightly proud of L.S Lowry’s iconic paintings depicting the north of England, which are well known across the country and around the world. I am very grateful to Cecilia for setting out in her impressive book the important influence of his talented tutor, Adolphe Valette, in his artistic accomplishments.”
