A group of locals are gearing up for a charity walk in support of The Christie that will see them walk over 100 miles from Handforth to the summit of Scarfell Pike.
The team of 12 will set off from Handforth Paddock, Cheshire on Friday 22nd May 2024 and aim to cover the 100 plus miles in nine days, arriving at Scarfell Pike on Saturday 30 May.
Ranging in age from 19 to 64, the team are from Handforth, Wilmslow, Tytherington and Macclesfield and will be joined by former Handforth resident Barry Toole who will travel from Germany to take part.
Speaking about the task ahead of them, Tim Marshall, team spokesperson, said:
“Last year we walked from Handforth to the summit of Snowdon and raised over £10,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society. This was a great challenge for us all, but such was the success, we’ve decided to do it again, although this time we will be walking even further.”
Several local businesses have got involved to support the group of walkers. These include Macclesfield based iTG Technologies, with the IT support company contributing £500 to help cover the cost of the campsites along the route.
Other companies involved include Peter Herd Bakers, who will be providing breakfast and lunch for the group to take on their first day and Marthall Tree Products are providing branded t-shirts featuring QR codes for members of the public to scan and donate as they walk the route.
Tim Marshall continues:
“We all know someone affected by cancer, including several of our group, so it was a no-brainer in offering our support as The Christie does an amazing job and is close to many people’s hearts. We have set a target of raising £6,000 this time round, although we are obviously hoping to raise as much as we can. We were blown away by the support and generosity we received last year and all of us are thoroughly looking forward to the challenge.”
