Cheshire MP Edward Timpson will be lacing up his running shoes for the 2024 London Marathon on Sunday, 21st April, in memory of his mother, children’s campaigner Alex Timpson, and fundraising for The Christie Charity.
Edward Timpson CBE KC, Member of Parliament for Eddisbury, will be joining around 50,000 runners for a challenging 26-mile run around London, which is renowned for its iconic route - showcasing landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, and Canary Wharf.
The 2024 London Marathon will be Edward’s 18th and his final one as a Member of Parliament. Having raised over £50,000 over the years for local causes and various charities, this year he has chosen to direct his fundraising efforts towards The Christie Charity, as it is one close to his heart.
Edward’s mother, Alex Timpson MBE, was treated for cancer at The Christie hospital before she died in January 2016, aged 69. Alex was a highly respected children’s campaigner, fostering 90 children and adopting two of Edward’s brothers. She was invested a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2006 in recognition of her services to children and families.
Edward Timpson CBE KC, Member of Parliament for Eddisbury, commented:
“I’m delighted to be able to run for The Christie charity again, and I hope my now 50-year-old legs hold out!
“The care given, and compassion shown, to my mother Alex and our family - by all the staff and volunteers at The Christie - made a massive difference during the many months of treatment of her cancer. Every pound raised will help them continue to do so for others needing their help and support.”
Lindsey Farthing, Sporting Events Manager from The Christie Charity, added:
“We’re so grateful that Edward is fundraising for The Christie Charity, and what a fitting way to celebrate the memory of his mum, Alex.
“We will be in London on 21st April to cheer him along - together with our other runners - and we wish him the very best of luck!”
