Ten students from schools across Macclesfield had the opportunity to participate in local MP, David Rutley’s Parliament Induction Day, on Tuesday 25th October.
Each year, David offers the chance for students to visit Westminster and engage in a day of activities learning how Parliament works and to question David on the work of an MP. This year was a unique experience for the participants, as the event was held on the same day Rishi Sunak MP become the country’s new Prime Minister.
Throughout the busy day, students were taken on a tour of the Houses of Parliament to witness the unique history and heritage of the building, followed by a visit to the House of Commons gallery to watch Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Oral Question’s. Following lunch with David, the students also sat in on the Financial Services & Markets Bill debate, the Economic Affairs Committee meeting and saw oral questions being answered in the House of Lords.
During a question-and-answer session with David, students raised important questions on current affairs, such as the process by which Rishi Sunak became the Prime Minister, how a reshuffle of the Cabinet is taken forward, as well as asking David about his work in both Parliament and the Macclesfield constituency.
Following the Induction Day, David said, “It was a real pleasure to welcome the students to Parliament, for the first induction day since the pandemic. I hope the day provided a useful insight into Parliamentary processes and the opportunity to explore potential career options, as well as helping the students with their courses. It was very interesting to hear about what matters most to the students and I wish them every success with their future studies.”
