Detectives investigating reports of a serious sexual assault in Hassall have concluded their investigation.
On Monday 18 April, 2022, police were called to reports that a woman had been sexually assaulted by three men in a layby in Hassall and a witness appeal for information was made.
Chief Inspector Claire Jesson said: “Following this report, officers conducted a detailed investigation and appealed to the public for help and information. I can now reassure the residents of Hassall, and the wider public, that we are satisfied this offence did not occur and I would like to thank them for their support.
“However, I do not want this to deter people from reporting such crimes to us for fear that they will not be believed – nothing could be further from the truth.
“We work really hard to encourage people who have been a victim of sexual abuse – no matter how long ago - to report it. You will be listened, you will receive the help and support you need and we will do all that we can to achieve justice where offences have taken place.
“We have dedicated teams of specialist officers and work with a number of fantastic organisations who offer help and support in dealing with the trauma of these offences and to help people to feel safe again.”
Anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault can contact police on 101, or in an emergency call 999. Incidents can also be reported online at https://www.cheshire.police.uk/ro/report/rsa/alpha-v1/v1/rape-sexual-assault-other-sexual-offences/ .
A 34-year-old woman has since been arrested on suspicion of wasting police time and perverting the course of justice in connection with the incident.
A 33-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent who was arrested on Tuesday has been released without charge.
