Winsford officers working to tackle anti-social behaviour

Officers are working to tackle anti-social behaviour in Winsford following a spate of incidents in the town.

On Monday 20th February, police received four reports of anti-social behaviour in Winsford involving groups of youths.

On each occasion officers attended quickly, and had cause to stop and search some who were reported to be in possession of weapons.

No weapons were found during any of these searches, and nobody that subsequently spoke to police actually confirmed seeing any weapons.

It is believed that these reports followed an under-18 disco that was held at a venue in the town on the same evening.

Sergeant Paul Cundy said: “We’re aware of rumours circulating in the community about a number of youths carrying knives and we have received a number of calls relating to the matter.

“However, I want to make it clear that on each report we received that evening, officers responded quickly and no weapons were located.

“In Cheshire, we have one of the lowest knife crime rates in the country and we have a strong approach in tackling those who are carrying knives in our communities.

“We frequently visit schools and community groups to educate teens on the dangers of carrying knives and the horrific consequences – not only for themselves but those around them.

“That being said, I want to reassure the community that anyone who is found to be intent on causing harm or found to be causing anti-social behaviour will be robustly dealt with.”

Sgt Cundy continued: “We are also working with the owners of the venue and the local authority to address the reports we have received in order to see what can be done to prevent this behaviour from occurring in the future.

“I would also urge anyone who has children in the town to educate them on the dangers of carrying knives and committing anti-social behaviour – the consequences of this behaviour won’t just affect them but also their families.

“I am also grateful to the public for raising their concerns and would urge you to continue to report any information that they have to us so that we can act and also build a picture of the activity that is going on in our neighbourhoods.

“This allows us to take appropriate action to address these issues swiftly and effectively if and when they arise.”
